Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
In addition to the visa fee, Bhutan levies a Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100 per person per day for regional tourists. This fee supports the country's sustainable tourism initiatives and is usually included in your tour package.
For all visitors except those from India, the SDF is USD 200 per person, per night. For guests from India (who have an Indian passport or Indian voter ID card), the SDF is 1,200 Indian rupees, per person, per night. Children who have not yet turned six are exempt from paying any SDF. Children aged between 6 and who have not yet turned 12 at the time of travel receive a 50% concessionary discount on their SDF. Children aged 12 and above pay the full SDF rate. Effective 01 September 2023, a 50% discount on the SDF has been announced for US Dollar paying tourists. Under this incentive, the SDF is USD 100 per person per night. This is a time limited incentive valid until 31 August 2027. Day visitors to the Bhutanese towns bordering India are also exempted from paying the SDF until they reach a point designated by the Bhutanese government.
Processing Time
Visa processing can take up to five business days. It's advisable to initiate your travel plans well in advance to accommodate this timeline.
Important Considerations
For Indian Visitors:
Indian nationals require a permit to enter Bhutan. You can apply for this in advance, or if you’re traveling with a tour operator or staying at a hotel, they can handle the application on your behalf. No fees are required upfront. Nationals of India are eligible for entry permit on arrival at the port of entry. Individuals must produce passport OR a Voter Identity Card in original at the port of entry. No other identity documents are accepted.
Alternatively, you may apply for a permit upon arrival at your entry point. However, wait times can vary depending on the number of applicants. If applying on arrival, ensure you have a passport-sized photograph. You must also have valid travel insurance for the duration of your stay, which you can arrange in advance or purchase upon arrival. Your Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) must be paid when applying for the permit, either online or in person.
For Visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives:
Nationals of Bangladesh and the Maldives require a visa to enter Bhutan. The application process is the same as for Indian visitors—you can apply online in advance, pay the applicable SDF, and arrange travel insurance before your trip. Alternatively, you may complete these steps upon arrival.
For a smoother experience, we recommend securing your permit or visa before traveling.
Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned arrival date in Bhutan.
Travel Insurance:Having valid travel insurance is a requirement for obtaining a visa.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey to the enchanting Kingdom of Bhutan.
