Mystical Bhutan: An 8-Day Expedition Through Nature, Heritage & Happiness

Day 1: Arrival at Paro International Airport – Transfer to Thimphu

Your journey begins as you arrive at Paro International Airport. After clearing immigration, your guide will greet you and escort you to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours, offering scenic views of the Paro River and lush valleys along the way. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and take time to acclimate to Bhutan’s serene atmosphere.

Day 2: Exploring Thimphu

Begin your exploration of Thimphu with a visit to the Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s rare national animal. Then, head to Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang) to see one of the world’s largest seated Buddha statues, offering panoramic views of the valley.

Next, visit the Simply Bhutan Museum, a living museum showcasing traditional Bhutanese architecture, lifestyle, and customs. Continue to the National Memorial Chorten, a sacred monument reflecting Bhutanese spiritual heritage.

In the evening, browse through the Craft Bazaar, where local artisans display exquisite Bhutanese handicrafts. Conclude your day with a leisurely stroll through the charming streets of Thimphu.

Overnight in Thimphu

Day 3: Thimphu to Punakha

After breakfast, visit the Folk Heritage Museum, where you can experience Bhutanese rural life firsthand.

Depart for Punakha, a scenic 2-hour drive (approximately 70 km). En route, stop at Dochula Pass (3,100m) to admire breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas and the 108 memorial chortens known as Druk Wangyal Chortens.

Continue your journey with a short hike through rice fields and traditional villages to reach Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility, dedicated to the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kunley.

In the afternoon, visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, located at the confluence of the Pho Chu (male) and Mo Chu (female) rivers. The dzong, renowned for its stunning architecture, served as Bhutan’s administrative center until the mid-20th century.

End your day with a walk across Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge, spanning 160 meters over the Pho Chu River, connecting a local village where you can interact with the community.

Overnight in Punakha

Day 4: Punakha to Haa Valley

Rise early and embark on a scenic drive (5-6 hours) towards Haa Valley, one of Bhutan’s most pristine and least-explored regions, recognized as one of the 25 Best Travel Destinations in the World for 2025.

Upon arrival, check into your accommodation—whether a homestay, guesthouse, or luxury glamping experience. Spend the evening relaxing with a traditional hot stone bath and savoring an authentic Bhutanese meal.

Overnight in Haa

Day 5: Exploring Haa Valley

At an altitude of 2,600 meters, Haa Valley offers a perfect blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty.

Take an optional Haa Panorama Trail Hike, a gentle trek through picturesque landscapes and charming villages.
Visit Lhakhang Karpo (White Monastery) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Monastery), two historic temples believed to be built under divine guidance.
Indulge in a delicious traditional Bhutanese meal and unwind with another hot stone bath at a local homestay.

Day 6: Haa to Paro

After breakfast, drive to Paro (2-3 hours). Upon arrival, check into your hotel.

In the afternoon:
Explore the National Museum, housed in a former watchtower, displaying a fascinating collection of Bhutanese artifacts, antiques, and historical relics.
Visit Paro Rinpung Dzong, a fortress overlooking the town, known for its impressive architecture and religious significance.

Day 7: Hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery)

Today, embark on Bhutan’s most iconic hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), dramatically perched 900 meters above the valley floor. The hike takes about 4-5 hours round-trip, with breathtaking views along the way.

After descending:

Visit Drukgyel Dzong, an ancient fortress symbolizing Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invaders, now beautifully restored.
In the evening, unwind at your hotel or opt for a traditional hot stone bath to soothe your muscles after the trek.

Overnight in Paro

Day 8: Departure
