Day 3: Journey to Punakha – Mountain Passes & Ancient Monasteries
After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Punakha, Bhutan’s former capital, nestled in a fertile valley. The drive takes about 2.5 hours, with a stop at Dochula Pass (3,100m). Here, enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayan range and explore the Druk Wangyal Chortens, a cluster of 108 stupas built to honor Bhutanese soldiers.
Continuing your journey, visit Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Fertility. This sacred monastery, dedicated to the revered saint Drukpa Kunley (The Divine Madman), is a pilgrimage site for couples seeking fertility blessings. Upon reaching Punakha, explore the magnificent Punakha Dzong, considered Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress. Built at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male river) and Mo Chhu (female river), the dzong played a crucial role in Bhutanese history and is an architectural masterpiece.
For a bit of adventure, take a short walk to Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge (160m), offering spectacular views of the valley and an opportunity to interact with local villagers. An optional white-water rafting experience on the Mo Chhu River is available for those looking to add a thrill to their day.
